Her Gift

Dear Reader,

I told you here about her gift, the special power of generation that he gave her. The next step of their plan was to devise a way to introduce her to the world. He wanted it to be a sensation- something that would cause an uproar in the gifted community, something worthy of the years of research and testing he put into making her: this perfect specimen of a being more gifted than any others that have come before.

They knew that for their plan to work that she could not disclose her relationship to him. The gifted community could never know of his role in this plot; they had to believe that she was one of them- a person who was born with these gifts. Only after gaining their trust, could she begin the slow work of unraveling their secrets.

In the end, they decided that the most poetic way to stage her initiation into the world of the gifted was to return to the beginning, to the streets where he had found her…

His Creation

Dear Reader,

I told you here that his goal was to give her the perfect gift, one that could not possibly be denied by the gifted community. After he began talking to her, telling her of his grand plans, she became the sole focus of his testing. And perhaps it was their shared conviction in his dream that eventually led to the breakthrough; whatever it was, it seemed that her body could withstand the chemical and electric treatments better than any of his previous subjects. So after years of research, testing, and training–because this kind of work takes time–he, or rather, they, succeeded.

She became the first synthetic gifted being.

When he initially embarked on this project, he knew that the gift he gave her would have to be different than anything else anyone had ever seen or heard of before. But to understand the gravity of what he has accomplished, I have to tell you more about the magic that the gifted possess.

Their Plan

Dear Reader,

You’ve probably been wondering about The Academy for a while now. I mentioned here that it’s the tentative title for this story so at least let me begin to tell you why.

You might say that The Academy is  the beating heart, the lifeblood, of the gifted community. It is the exclusive gatekeeper to the innermost ranks of the gifted, the place where gifted children would train to assume their proper roles in society, where they would first begin to prove their worth to the world. So, for him, The Academy was the place where they had to begin too. Their plans were contingent on her gaining entry to this institution, infiltrating its hallowed walls so that she could ferret its secrets to him.

Her Beginning

Dear Reader,

I only mentioned her briefly here, but everything I am saying now might make more sense if I tell you about her beginning too.

She was already an orphan when he found her wandering the streets in a rough part of town. He took her like he took the others, sealing her away in the back rooms of his mansion, the ones he saved for his secret experiments. But he quickly discovered that she was not like the other children. She didn’t cry, didn’t complain when he injected the chemicals into her arms with those giant needles that made the other children tremble violently in fear. She even seemed to accept the electric shock treatments. At least, she didn’t resist when he strapped her into the chair; her body convulsed, of course, and there were screams, but those were natural reactions.

His Tireless Pursuit

Dear Reader,

I hope that you aren’t tired of hearing about him yet because, as I mentioned here, we have only scratched the surface of his beginning. But I want to fast forward now from that fleetingly happy childhood and lonely adolescence to his adult years. The slow burning hatred of being excluded from the gifted community, which should have been his birth right, has not dissipated with time. You might even say that it grew more intense as he learned how to hide his resentment behind polite smiles and an air of nonchalance. Instead of railing against his parents and siblings like he did when he was a teenager, he pretends to accept them and his own difference now.

Still, in private, his wounds fester and he plots to unravel their secrets, to lay claim to a world that should have been his, not caring if he destroys it in the process.
